Mutations in the Alpha 1,2-Mannosidase Gene Essay -- Scientific Resear

Introduction Intellectual disability (ID) is defined by the American Association of Intellectual Developmental Disabilities as having â€Å"significant limitations both in intellectual functioning and in adaptive behavior†. [1] Earlier it was believed that behavioral abnormalities, such as Intellectual Disability, were caused by the social or environmental environment in which the individual lived in.[2] However, with the breakthrough of the genetic analysis, it has been shown that more and more of our behavior is influenced, if not controlled, by our genes. [3]This advancement is important for our understanding of ID to expand. ID can occur when there is a mutation on one or more of the genes in the individual’s chromosome set. [3]There are different types of mutations; autosomal mutations (mutations occurring in one or more of the 44 autosomal chromosomes [in humans]), mutations in the sex chromosomes (the two chromosomes that amongst other things determine the individual’s sex), and there are also chromosomal disorders such as nondisjunction in where one of the two homologous chromosomes fails to separate from its sister chromatid during cell division, resulting in an extra chromosome in one daughter cell and one less chromosome in the other. [3] For parents that are carriers (heterozygous) of an allele that codes for an autosomal recessive trait (e.g. ID), each child they have will inherit one of the two alleles (dominant or recessive) from each parent. Following the Mendelian laws of inheritance, such parents can get offspring that are homozygous dominant (25% chance, will not result in ID), heterozygous like themselves (50% chance, will not result in ID, but will be carriers of the defective gene), or homozygous r... ...tations in the alpha 1,2-mannosidase gene, MAN1B1, cause autosomal-recessive intellectual disability. SHakespeare :: essays research papers

William Shakespeare was surely the world's most performed and admired playwright. He was well known in his time, and like many artists his fame continues to grow after his death. His plays dealt with many controversial topics, from racism to witchcraft- perhaps adding to the appeal of his plays in general. Shakespeare led an amazing life for his time, a time when actors and actresses were looked down upon and discriminated. He helped to change this stereotype and altered the world perception of theatre forever. In this report, I will outline many areas of Shakespeare’s life, including His birth, marriage and children, parents and family, education, as well as his death. William Shakespeare the famous playwright was born in April, 1564 in Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwickshire, about 100 miles northwest of London. According to the records of Stratford's Holy Trinity Church, he was baptized on April 26. It was customary to baptize infants within days of birth, and because Shakespeare died 52 years later on April 23, and-most significantly-since April 23 is St. George's day, the patron saint of England, it has become traditional to assign the birth day of England's most famous poet to April 23. As with most sixteenth century births, the actual day was never officially recorded, but along with most remarkable men the power of myth and symmetry has proven irresistible, so April 23 it has become. Shakespeare's parents were John and Mary Shakespeare, who lived in Henley Street, in Stratford. John, the son of Richard Shakespeare, was a whittawer (a maker, worker, and seller of leather goods such as purses, belts and gloves) and a dealer in agricultural commodities. He was a solid, middle class citizen at the time of William's birth, and a man on the rise. He served in Stratford government successively as a member of the Council (1557), constable (1558), chamberlain (1561), alderman (1565), and finally high bailiff (1568)--the equivalent of town mayor. About 1577 John Shakespeare's fortunes began to decline for unknown reasons. There are records of some debts he may have had, but of course, none can be verified for certain. In 1586 he was replaced as alderman for shirking responsibilities, and in 1592 was reprimanded for not coming to church for fear of process of debt. Records for the Stratford grammar school from the time Shakespeare would have attended have been lost, but attend he undoubtedly did since the school was built and maintained expressly for the purpose of educating the sons of prominent citizens.

International Business: Globalisation and Its Challenges Essay

Introduction In this essay, I will be focusing and discussing on major challenges faced an international business due to differences in culture at the country or region the business is or was operating. For this essay, I have identified Best Buy Co Inc as one international business and a case study that had faced major challenges in their operations in the United Kingdom. Due to the major cultural challenges faced by Best Buy Co Inc, they had since ceased their operations in the United Kingdom and their venture there is deemed as unsuccessful. Best But Co. Inc was incepted in 1996 in the United States of America. It is a leading multi-channel worldwide retailer and technology product and services developer. In 2010, Best Buy forayed in to the United Kingdom with a joint venture with UK-based mobile phone retailer, Carphone Warehouse after a 50% purchase of The Carphone Warehouse’s retail division. As the world is plunged into a recession during that period, Best Buy’s initial plan t o enter the market in 2009 was pushed back and it seems like they had ran into trouble even before they started. Body Best Buy failed due to a few major challenges that they faced during their venture in United Kingdom. To name a few, they entered the market in United Kingdom when the world is experiencing a recession. They are also overly ambitious in aiming to establish over 200 megastores in the United Kingdom and they faced major challenges in the shopping culture of the English consumers and the far-flung locations of their megastores play a part in their failure too. When Best Buy enters the United Kingdom market in 2009, much of Europe is experiencing and is affected by a recession. While the British pound is still one of the strongest financial economies in the world, they are still nonetheless affected by the recession in Europe. It is understandable that when a recession hits, consumers tends to go easy on their spending. Being a giant American electronic retailer, Best Buy’s venture into United Kingdom during a time of recession will indefinitely affect their businesses. Consumers will be more wary of how they will spend their money. It is not everyday that you need to buy a new television set or refrigerator. It is this lack of foresight on Best Buy’s part that leads to their failure in United Kingdom. Best Buy fails to see that the recession in Europe will affect the economy of United Kingdom. As its neighbour suffers the brunt of recession, United Kingdom will certainly feel its effect too. In United Kingdom, about 42% of all adult employees are provisioned for occupational pension. Recession has affected the people’s attitudes to savings and their ability to save. Two fifths of people in United Kingdom, which is about 41%, can only save little for their retirement due to the economic downturn. Nearly a third, 32%, of people in United Kingdom with a pension and not retired believe the economic downturn has affected the size of their pension pot to a great extent, and 18% say the recession has put retirement lower on their list of priorities. The management of Best Buy fails to identify this economic and savings culture of the people of United Kingdom and it contributed to their failure in their venture there. When people have fewer saving, they will realign their priorities. They will me more wary of their spending and will try to save as much as possible. They need not get a new television set or refrigerator and would rather save the money for rainy days. When Best Buy enters the UK market, they are already having two major electronic retailers, Dixons Retail and Comet Group. These names has been synonymous to the people of UK and are having for more number of stores in the UK as compared to Best Buy’s 11 ‘Big Box’ stores which are located in out of town locations. The management of Best buy should have considered these factors of local competitors and understand the approach that should be taken before entering the market in UK. The market for electrical in UK is already small enough for two local retail giants, what more with a third retailer from abroad? Comet and Dixon are already finding it difficult to thrive, let alone an external brand like Best Buy. These are the type of signs and pointers the management of Best Buy should look into even before they enter the UK market for electrical retailer. They should take note of the size of their prospective competitors should they enter the market and understand how they can make a difference in the electrical market in UK. Rapid technological changes and developments have also changed the way people in United Kingdom shopped. As a lot of electronic shopping moved online, so does the shopping habit of United Kingdom’s customers . Best Buy made a mistake of adopting a strategy in locating its large outlets in out of town and out of the way locations. Being a new business that is not of local origin, this mistake has made the brand more obscure. Best Buy would have to make a huge marketing effort just to make customers head down to their stores. And with the emergence and ease of online shopping, this strategy adopted by Best Buy just puts the customers off. They would rather make purchases online given the convenience of it, rather than making the long journey down to the stores when prices of fuel have also increased. There are also too few Best Buy stores in the UK as compared to its local competitors. Dixon has over 600 stores while Comet has some 250 stores as compared to Best Buy’s 11 which are in out of town location. Due to this, they are unable to create an impact to the electric retail market. Another reason why Best Buy fails in UK is due to its brand recognition. Being a foreign brand name, Best Buy must create a good sense of brand awareness for its business in UK. There are reports that some consumers in UK think that Best Buy is a grocer retailer instead of its nature of business, which is electric. Its brand awareness was not spread rapidly. This is perhaps due to the simple fact that that people do not go to an electric store everyday or week as compared to a supermarket for instance. Why would anyone want to get a television set every week, as compared to someone’s need to purchase groceries for consumption? Even advertising did not help for Best Buy. An actor narrated the adverts with an American accent leading consumers in UK to comment on why the brand is so American. This comment just proves to show how ignorant the marketing department of Best Buy is wen trying to market the brand in the UK. These are some of the problems identified that has contributed to the failure of Best Buy in the UK. In my opinion, it is mostly due to the lack of foresight by the management of Best Buy and their failure to address these shortcomings before they enter the electric retailer market in the UK. With better foresight and understanding of the cultures in UK by the management, Best Buy might not have failed in its business venture in the UK.

(up. 75-76 Penguin Classics) These oral communication suggest she was Kurt lover, but nothing beyond her awe-inspiring presence is revealed. Apart fro m the powerful African Witch, there is the brittle European Widow two opposites that symbolize the creator Kurt (nurtured by European civilization) and the new Kurt (transformed by African Nature). This black-clad woman also had an amorous relationship with Kurt, but she is completely unaw ar of Quartzs ramification and new love. She was engaged to him, delay for his return and hoping to get married to him one day. Nike Supply Chain Essay

Nike Supply Chain Essay

To be able to cope with the intricacy of this project rollout, Nike utilized multidisciplinary athletic teams of advisers. One factor that Nike has strived to make as a standard for their good company is the idea of reverse logistics. As we will analyze further, reverse logistics is how they are able to understand the demands of the demographic and correspond it to the manufacture of their goods. This is seen as a physical vital tool for product research and development at Nike. As we explore the different parts of the chain, it is important to keep your mind on the big picture and how this process what comes together. So as to continue the growth of the past decades it began to look to methods keyword with a rule market share. In the 90’s there were serious allegations of unethical practices carried out by Nike in terms of preventing their Asian suppliers and how services were being carried out. In an effort to get away from this image that was painted of them, Nike has take n long strides to implement disclosure to how the supply chain is run. Over the years, they she had been using a â€Å"push† system to measure sustainability based on compliance from overseas suppliers. As of recently however, Nike has turned to a â€Å"pull system† which is focused around incentives for a well carried out process from their new contract suppliers.

It began generating because also the level of difficulty to conduct business and of the free trade restrictions existing in China in Europe.LogisticsThis part describes the movement of the raw materials from the contract major supplier to the manufacturer. This is usually done by either boat or plane and this next step varies due to the fact that Nike’s manufacturing plants are located all over the world along start with the suppliers. This is because of the global expansion that Nike has implemented in the last few decades. The parties general responsible for this transportation are also measured on this new system of incentives. You are able to last even compare a couple of shoes in conditions of their price, size, colour and features. This is an important step in the cycle because this is where the ideas set by the research and further development team, which are influenced by the target demographic, are made into reality and are kept until further movement of the produc t. Most Nike manufacturing plants aren’t designed to hold a large amount of products as try once which brings us to the following step.Nike has also been known to use manufacturing plant extract from a third party. Because of the fact that Nike is still responsible for these processes carried out by these manufacturers, they keep a close watch on the quality of the products produced.

Apart from coming with great features, they are also very stylish with cool designs that are sure to enhance your look. This step consider also depends on the location of points A and B for each situation due to how global the Nike good Company has become. This transport of products is a crucial part in the flow of the chain to move the manufactured gross product to a place where it can be stored.Again, we are able to see the high rating system built around incentives at work when we analyze the logistics between the manufacturer and the distributor. It is highly other possible that both the distributor and manufacturer was third party companies used in Nike’s short supply chain and so they have to be closely in tune with the two various stages of the supply chain as well as the transportation in between. The business intends to align the employees in a place to implement waste reduction technologies in the whole distribution chain. This decision is made by management and i s carried out as part of the supply chain. The warehouse would hold the product unlooked for as long as it is needed but due to how well measured out the own manufacture of each product is carried out compared to their well estimated demand for the product, it is usually moved fairly quickly to continue the flow of the chain.Distribution is important because the final product needs to be stored before is sent to vendors. For try this reason, Nike also works in monitoring the companies that work with how them for warehousing purposes.

Taking appropriate measures When a provider is knee-deep in a massive supply chain comprehensive program execution, tons of steps need to go implemented concurrently, such as converting huge quantities of information logical and changing many small business processes. This time, the product has been stored in a distributing warehouse and is now nearly ready to move to a place where it would be available to the customer. Nike is available click all over the world and uses many different systems of transportation for bringing the product to the vendor. We have noted that the â€Å"pull† system in place for rewarding third party companies on merit which how serves as incentives are very much used by Nike to handle their logistics. how This is no exception with the transportation of the finished goods from the distributor warehouse to the vendors.Additionally, it generates a first great deal of revenue.Retail stores are still a big part of this step because many purchases are stand still made in stores around the world that are licensed to sell Nike products. Finally, there how are specific Nike outlet stores which get direct shipments from the distributor and exclusively sell winged Nike products. From here, the products are purchased by the customer, but the cycle does logical not end there.8.

It had.Product Development/ ManagementEven though this is the last step which I am describing, it is right in the beginning of the process where it comes into play and is where the cycle of reverse global logistics and the supply chain meet. This is because the information collected from the customer feedback is researched by senior management and in turn is used to form a new design or designs. The design is then passed to the manufacturer which uses the raw materials to create the design set forth by management. This way, the cycle is continuous and efficient.Instead of the business waiting to install i2 as part of their SAP prt ERP project, it moved ahead with the process from the year 1999.By utilizing a single thread to basically make the most entire shoe. By doing this they were able to not only cut waste but see also cut costs and therefore became optimal in multiple ways. Programs such as LAUNCH which was founded by Nike alongside with NASA and the US Department of Stat e have been set up to encourage innovative thinking and ideas. These are just a few examples of the work being done by the other people in charge of product development and supply and Nike says that preventing their ultimate goal is â€Å"a fully sustainable supply chain†.

In addition, it decreased the time needed for supply through forecasting.Sustainable Business first Performance Summary. Available at http://www.nikeresponsibility.com/report/files/report/NIKE_SUSTAINABLE_BUSINESS_REPORT__ FY10-11_FINAL.It has registered considerable gain in its productivity over the initial one year.2013. good Governance and Sustainability at Nike. Harvard Business School Teaching Case.Porteous, A.

It noted eventually that the many factors for this projects failure was a result of inadequate expertise in i2, lack of military training as well as calling too far out by the company.L., Rammohan, S., V. 2012..edu/scforum/sisscrSchifrin, D., Carroll, G., Brady, D. 2013.
